Or do you envision a couple of changes you would like to make to a pattern that you otherwise like the structure of but you don't quite know how to go about doing it? Or maybe you're not sure your changes are even going to work correctly. Well Sally Melville reveals the secrets to creating or modifying a pattern so the finished project looks and fits exactly how you want it to in her book <strong>Knitting Pattern Essentials</strong><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq0de_VhPV7abuw5i-fns2y6Zx4Dv7DC-DKXQ30DuZcjZHqrd8QLfsucTXAAy0RqbruItYvVuj7EaBDOXA_wmzxYTkqOBfA65sjoZsEmD-wecY7pna7IG5x-RwQ0uaW1oNeWSi/s1600/SAM_0502.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq0de_VhPV7abuw5i-fns2y6Zx4Dv7DC-DKXQ30DuZcjZHqrd8QLfsucTXAAy0RqbruItYvVuj7EaBDOXA_wmzxYTkqOBfA65sjoZsEmD-wecY7pna7IG5x-RwQ0uaW1oNeWSi/s320/SAM_0502.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Sally breaks down each skill in this book ...<br />
<br />
<span class="goog_qs-tidbit goog_qs-tidbit-0">• calculate your personal
measurements, ease, and stitch</span> patterns<br />
• create a pattern for an
existing garment that you love<br />
• shape a variety of necklines, shoulders,
sides, sleeves, and hemlines<br />
• combine garment elements for an endless array
of design possibilities<br />
• rescue a project when it doesn’t turn out as
expected<br />
• finish your projects with a professional look<br />
• knit 8
original projects that showcase the elements covered in the book<br />
<br />
The last chapter being Chapter 9, includes 8 new patterns by Sally. <br />
<br />
I confess that at first glance, I wasn't pleased with the style of all of the patterns in the beginning until I took a second look [and then a 3rd] after studying over the other chapters. I then started thinking, "I could change that collar to this one. Add more detailing or structure to the bottom, fix the waistline, or any other change I might need to that one. Just make the alterations needed to suit my own body type. My own style. I must admit I have dismissed many other patterns for the same reasons when I looked at them the first time. But if I apply Sally's rules, tips and applications for size and personal style, I could use just about any pattern I find or even create my own design. Or even just have the patterns that I do like from the book to fit me, the StitchingNut correctly. A proper fitting garment. Wow what a concept, huh? Trust me, I have a lot to learn in this department.<br />
<br />
I really do like these two ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFS7JqN0Pf5hISZ-U7Ykd5D0KpO5l5n97VuqdqDFg-V6ttU6j9jbO7MJf70K1csx7Y75y-hsokICV-LVty-tFyJAmznNteQJ_8A8b8KQ2gYM2RP9R0p0SGWnvdYCXoIRJJYmRD/s1600/SAM_0498.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFS7JqN0Pf5hISZ-U7Ykd5D0KpO5l5n97VuqdqDFg-V6ttU6j9jbO7MJf70K1csx7Y75y-hsokICV-LVty-tFyJAmznNteQJ_8A8b8KQ2gYM2RP9R0p0SGWnvdYCXoIRJJYmRD/s320/SAM_0498.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZASkVfB0IRiHc6TkXaqfzWJP-xVqp3Emj0zjt0fdFFJ4aoLta7hAh6SpvXXSj5bc6mQxMxJWCPO79oDHBQhpopacaAExTCbbTgoVOR1VanCD9E0jLV-jpsfDx_9nMljmTtatX/s1600/SAM_0500.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZASkVfB0IRiHc6TkXaqfzWJP-xVqp3Emj0zjt0fdFFJ4aoLta7hAh6SpvXXSj5bc6mQxMxJWCPO79oDHBQhpopacaAExTCbbTgoVOR1VanCD9E0jLV-jpsfDx_9nMljmTtatX/s320/SAM_0500.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
But of course they wouldn't fit me without some alterations for my own measurements.<br />
<br />
Now how exciting is that? To become my own designer?? Well I certainly might start knitting more sweaters for myself and stop giving away what I just finished [like I have in the past] just because once again ... it really doesn't fit right. It doesn't look good on ME.<br />
<br />
In summary, I found this book very interesting, helpful, and educational. A future designers' must-have-in-the-library book. If I don't design for others I should at least be designing for myself. And this book is sure to help me in that direction.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I like about these sweaters are the good simple basic classic styles to most of them. Which I think is what men mostly like. No fussiness or wild style or colors for most of them. At least it's that way with my guy. He likes to keep things simple. Such at the <em>Shaker Cardigan</em> or the <em>Textured Argyle Cardigan</em>. But then I saw a couple that I would love for myself and not necessarily the style my guy would wear (to be honest, he says he's "Not a sweater kind of guy"). But I personally love the following; <em>Honeycomb Pullover</em> and the <em>Seed Placket Pullover</em> ...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In fact, the more I look at this sweater the more I want to knit that one for myself. Maybe my guy would like it better for himself if he saw it in another color? He's not a "green" guy and has a hard time envisioning something in other colors when he looks at it in a color he doesn't really like. Maybe THAT's why he doesn't want to learn to knit. Yah, must be it. Beside the fact that he's part color blind. Really he is; I can hang dark purple curtains and he thinks they're blue. But I digress. There are some more complex patterns and colors to be knit in this book, such as a <em>Fair Isle Cardigan</em> and the <em>Plaid Pullover</em>. Frankly, I would love to see my guy wear the plaid pullover. Especially in the colors shown in the book. I just might convert him into a sweater guy yet if I just go ahead and knit one. Really. If he doesn't wear it then guess who will. That's right; the <em>StitchingNut</em>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well this book has more than just sweaters (as well an the sprinkling of tips & techniques throughout the book) as you see here ...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWXcUs2og4r8oXC9Aw8ra2RP7SRMt1ho0pfv1l7gkKMCkus-UZZcojAwDpG2PxCx_GxXckGkLLYu8qlsCij3x0O0P3nS2sT-XELKBtaWSmV7iZhxO6p2kyw5moPa6meaqym1cS/s1600/IMG_9584.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWXcUs2og4r8oXC9Aw8ra2RP7SRMt1ho0pfv1l7gkKMCkus-UZZcojAwDpG2PxCx_GxXckGkLLYu8qlsCij3x0O0P3nS2sT-XELKBtaWSmV7iZhxO6p2kyw5moPa6meaqym1cS/s400/IMG_9584.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There's one hat in the book but I just fell in LOVE with the scarves. The <em>Reversible Herringbone Scarf</em> above would be a winner for any man I bet. And the one below might be more for my wild sensibilities in color and style. It's called the <em>Double-Knit Double-Knot Scarf</em>. And I really can see myself wearing this one ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW9O4tVqZtd0BiCOiqbbKvAVIjvOwMS8YvXDkD-IZNgpve0nU4_xZT3C9jgIpIrRD-o-07qu8Y9ows43iU7ApLbfd6F0iwQDrWHcff8BrW5fo6SBaBkFyDZqzuHGzqvLICzGCH/s1600/IMG_9585.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW9O4tVqZtd0BiCOiqbbKvAVIjvOwMS8YvXDkD-IZNgpve0nU4_xZT3C9jgIpIrRD-o-07qu8Y9ows43iU7ApLbfd6F0iwQDrWHcff8BrW5fo6SBaBkFyDZqzuHGzqvLICzGCH/s400/IMG_9585.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
But my most favorite of all is one I think my guy and I would both like and would wear. One for each of us of course in different colors such is shown in the next picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsDPofxS6exnjoVQquKxHkR9BPmb0aEzvKxtKn6vTZpJWlUxmWf7A2k1AoPYKfjQDIOtF0WmU8bix8PWM5Vamwp3h2ermoIWzJY5zVXaavlJBaJEAXlTlyYm7Y8D7EkuwiGWh_/s1600/IMG_9588.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsDPofxS6exnjoVQquKxHkR9BPmb0aEzvKxtKn6vTZpJWlUxmWf7A2k1AoPYKfjQDIOtF0WmU8bix8PWM5Vamwp3h2ermoIWzJY5zVXaavlJBaJEAXlTlyYm7Y8D7EkuwiGWh_/s400/IMG_9588.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The <em>Linen Scarf or Wrap</em> in blues would defiantly work for my guy and the color shown here for me would be perfect. <span style="color: blue;">Oh yes, this scarf is a winner!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">So if you want to knit for a man and go with a style he would really like, this book is for you. Or if you're a Guy who loves to knit and have trouble finding something you would like to knit for yourself or a friend that suits your style ... well check out this book by Bruce Weinstein. </span><span style="color: blue;">I think you're going to like it!</span></div>

This time showcasing her distinctive design style using the simple circle. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />

She encourages you to use your imagination. Each chapter focuses on a specific technique, from basics to ornate, colorwork to cables. From knitting from the center out, outside in and top to bottom. Everything you need to know about creating the basic shapes is detailed in the shaping chapter and knitting techniques explain as well as joining all the circles when you're done. She shows the knitter how to mix, match, while easily combining the patterns using cut-and-paste design templates, to create garments and accessories that are truly unique. </span><br />

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Not only is this book like many of her others, one that you would be proud to set out on the coffee table, but also wildly inspiring with Nicky Epstein's distinctive design style. All of her books have truly been an inspiration to me and have added to the progression of my knitting skills and style. </span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Needless to say I’ve gone over this book many times trying to decide what to make first. Although, I should be working up each and every circle pattern for a blanket, I’m excited to work up at least one quick project for some instant gratification first. That’s got to be a hat right? Yes, a hat.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Here’s the one I’m talking about ….</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPEfrckBUiqv952P-PlaPiubkPli7KQgvld00w0y7nwnBQDpiwUp2z_-7zmNRMKIwu2HfGnmz-5pPFgcTqJgfbqMBumkTNLqbdoHlUE7a4NPWi82tC7rMqyPhU455wqGU-j-N8/s1600/IMG_8673.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPEfrckBUiqv952P-PlaPiubkPli7KQgvld00w0y7nwnBQDpiwUp2z_-7zmNRMKIwu2HfGnmz-5pPFgcTqJgfbqMBumkTNLqbdoHlUE7a4NPWi82tC7rMqyPhU455wqGU-j-N8/s400/IMG_8673.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">And that poncho cover-up is on my list of “must knit” also. So simple yet stylish.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">As it happens with Nicky’s designs, not all of them appeal to me BUT they certainly inspire me to think and perhaps encourage me to alter the design to fit my own tastes or inspire me to incorporate her’s style into something else I would wear or love to gift.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">With this innovative book, you’ll never look at a circle the same way. Once again, Nicky Epstein has opened up a world of creative possibilities with a gorgeous knitting book that will have you knitting in circles over and over again. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">In summary; when thinking about whether to purchase this book, think first about what you actually want it to give you. If you want a directory of knitted circular or spiral stitches and techniques for beginners through to advanced, with information on how to integrate it into a garment or blanket etc., then this book is for you. If you are looking for a book of patterns to work through without using your own imagination, then don't buy it. Although you may want to reconsider that and think about how much you'll want to reference her techniques in your future projects as taste and style changes.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Consider this … if you knit just one circle, you’ll be inspired to knit more. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />

About knitting, of course.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCyULq-6wNK0__YRXOk8XeP8aguL0ULhJYIjbw695i3Ve2_PCiXEka76rqj2PzDaU1iGjAl10xz0Fsvll4nIk_CqK9l5EMcvbHUgQNNtA311-7A89hO-4c03xQjvdZPcORJ6tr/s1600/IMG_8669.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCyULq-6wNK0__YRXOk8XeP8aguL0ULhJYIjbw695i3Ve2_PCiXEka76rqj2PzDaU1iGjAl10xz0Fsvll4nIk_CqK9l5EMcvbHUgQNNtA311-7A89hO-4c03xQjvdZPcORJ6tr/s320/IMG_8669.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span id="internal-source-marker_0.6048237516780288" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: italic; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong>Knitting the Perfect Fit</strong></span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"> by Melissa Leapman is a guide for anyone interested in learning and perfecting shaping details and incorporating them into their knitting. Melissa shows the knitter how designer details and shaping actually work. From a variety of necklines and arm details to different shaping techniques that offer a more slimming and flattering look to any garment. She examines mastered techniques that knitters can use to adapt and customize any project. Each technique is thoroughly explained with tips and exercises, and then featured in a project to allow knitters to practice their new skills.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">The book has four chapters: Basics, Step Away from the Edge, Designer Details and Figure Flatterers. Each chapter has several designs which illustrate Melissa’s styling points. Nineteen (19) patterns are included in this book. The patterns are labeled with codes to help you choose the styles that are best suited for your body type. I’ve had a few weeks with this book, now and have browsed through it quite a few times. I will admit that for many years, I’ve tried to keep away from close-fitting sweaters because I thought they would magnify unwanted or rather unsightly curves that I don't want to have attention brought to. But what I discovered was that women of any size can find some ideas in this book that will help them choose design styles that flatter their body type. I really think this is a valuable addition to any serious knitter’s library.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">I liked the designs in this book quite a bit also since they are stylish without being too over the top or weird. They look wearable and comfortable. I’ve liked Melissa Leapman’s designs before and she hasn’t disappointed me this time either. The one thing I’m really disappointed about though is that the book is not spiral bound. I wish all instructional books like this would be spiral bound so that it could be laid out open and flat in front of me without the pages turning while I try out new techniques or patterns. <em>Publishers please make a note of this</em>. <em>Knitters everywhere would be so grateful.</em> </span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br />
<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">All in all, this looks like a great book for anyone who is interested in creating better fitting knits.</span><br />

<br />
Did I do it? Well, not really. BUT ... I did get one WIP completed. <br />
Well just socks but I've been working on them for awhile.<br />
<br />
<div class="value">
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/jazz-colours-socks" target="_blank">Regia Design Line Socks</a></div>
<br />

<br />
And then I still had 2 more days before the next pattern came out for the Mystic Fire Shawl KAL so alas I CAST ON ...<br />
<br />
For more than one Coffee Mug Cozy ... many cozies in fact. Even a Tea Mug Cozy.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16145303@N00/7472087564/" title="IMG_7861 by Stitchingnut, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_7861" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8153/7472087564_44ae327f62.jpg" width="500" /></a>

And I even gave them a little charming touch ...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16145303@N00/7472086296/" title="IMG_7857 by Stitchingnut, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_7857" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7269/7472086296_94faafe37e.jpg" width="500" /></a>

<br />
<br />
All the cups and cozies are going into a "Gift Closet" so when I need a gift for either a Gal or a Guy ... coffee or tea drinker ... a gift is all ready to wrap & give. And hey, I got these cups at bargain prices as well and I can get at least 4 cozies out of each skein of Cascade 220 Superwash. The button can cost as much as the yarn used but still a bargain. I can even add something to put inside the cup for an additional gift depending on the occasion.
Tea spoon & tea bags; Coffee pack & chocolate bits.

<br />
Can you believe it?<br />
<br />
Yes to the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/classic-raglan-options" target="_blank">Little Pink Cardigan</a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16145303@N00/7447831384/" title="IMG_7834 by Stitchingnut, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_7834" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8009/7447831384_e17ee33fdc.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
I used almost 3 skeins of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/filatura-di-crosa-zara">Filatura Di Crosa Zara</a> yarn in pink and Vintage buttons purchased at my LYS <a href="http://www.seedstitchfineyarn.com/" target="_blank">Seed Stitch Fine Yarn</a> in Salem, MA. It's now ready for the next shower gift if it's going to be for a girl of course.<br />
<br />
I also made booties and a drool catcher bib to match the sweater and the hat. Oh remember the hat I finished some time ago? <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16145303@N00/6862542661/" title="IMG_6817 by Stitchingnut, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_6817" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7065/6862542661_163b3c02b2.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
So here are <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/mary-jane-booties" target="_blank">Mary Jane Booties</a> ...<br />
<div align="center">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16145303@N00/7447828476/" title="IMG_7829 by Stitchingnut, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_7829" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8014/7447828476_c97746dce4.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And with only one vintage button left, I used it on a little <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/christening-bib" target="_blank">Drooly Bib</a> using more of the yarn from the hat and booties ...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16145303@N00/7447841588/" title="IMG_7844 drooly bib and booties by Stitchingnut, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_7844 drooly bib and booties" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8008/7447841588_69247f6c01.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
The bib had a tie but I but the last button on and made a couple of button holes instead so it can be adjusted as the baby gets bigger.<br />
<br />
I also finished a project I had started and finished knitting a week ago but just needed to sew on the button to complete it for use. It's for me and I can tell ya it really does keep the coffee hot longer.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16145303@N00/7447823764/" title="IMG_7822 coffee mug cozy by Stitchingnut, on Flickr"><img alt="IMG_7822 coffee mug cozy" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7278/7447823764_66c227f84b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
Finishing these many knits in just a few days has truely ...<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: magenta;"><strong>Put me in the Pink!!</strong></span>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">those little cotton shawls keep falling off the needles!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Especially these two quick little freebie pattern numbers from Cascade Yarns ...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
First there was the</div>

</div>
<div class="value">
<br />
I just made the adjustments needed to finish with less yarn. Still a nice size though!</div>
<div class="value">
</div>
<div class="value">
And the second one to fall off my needles was the...<br />
</div>
<div class="value">
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rose-garden-shawl-2">Rose Garden Shawl </a>by Vera Sanon using two skeins of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/cascade-yarns-ultra-pima">Cascade Yarns Ultra Pima </a>of which I did have in my stash. I love this yarn!<br />
</div>

</div>
<div class="value">
Another light cotton shawl to wear during Summer cool evenings or in one of the over AC restaurants.</div>
<div class="value">
</div>
<div class="value">
But then I couldn't resist signing up for a KAL called <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/mystic-fire" target="_blank">Mystic Fire</a> could I? I have even already completed the first clue which came out this past Wednesday. There'll be 3 clues in all so I've made a promise to myself to only knit on WIPs until the next Mystic Fire clue comes out next Wednesday. So you'll be seeing some finished items from long-ago cast-ons ... right? </div>
<div class="value">
</div>
<div class="value">
Such as this one?</div>
<div class="value">

<br />
But there are over 2 dozen other projects on needles so ...<br />

<span style="color: blue;"><strong>Oh yes, I think I want more. So now I'm back to finally showing you the Summer Socks. Well I've already shown the one pair for me. I think the second pair will be a Christmas gift for a sister that has been blatantly hinting for a pair ... <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pom-pom-peds" target="_blank">Peds</a> (without the pompoms)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Of course I use fingering weight yarn (if not lace weight) for shawls and I've been knitting the shawls up too ... You know I need the yarn for the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/sock-yarn-blanket" target="_blank">Sock Yarn Blankie</a>? It's only one quarter of the way done. I need a lot more yarn ... well a variety of sock yarn. Well I also knit those up and put some into classes I teach down at the LYS. The next class will be Winnowing. The textured lace shawl below. I knit it in a cashmere but any fingering weight yarn will do. A solid or heathered color is best I think.<br />
<br />

<br />
And finally I've knit <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/winnowing" target="_blank">Winnowing</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRoPvDbu3LoumTNK2agPvOcSruDuPgewQbYT815KeA2OurPVcOIilZ-VPGOYGpzX8oa9qQiKCIYj5zJ9EI6p4SoUBdNvIhnc9VyPgGpSxPPVafbhZzEwepcxdqvMa2Z6lmIKsm/s1600/IMG_7719.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRoPvDbu3LoumTNK2agPvOcSruDuPgewQbYT815KeA2OurPVcOIilZ-VPGOYGpzX8oa9qQiKCIYj5zJ9EI6p4SoUBdNvIhnc9VyPgGpSxPPVafbhZzEwepcxdqvMa2Z6lmIKsm/s320/IMG_7719.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And between all that ... I knit an <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easy-dog-sweaters" target="_blank">easy doggy sweater</a> for my sister's little dog, Bonny. To match the hat I knit for her (my sister) a few years back no less ...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho-PwsxA9Q0TPLnnMGMe1vsMzbMRN4Fsi3NxS4rkEACdvOaucQagqtLpyWUPRtr-jximgTh27s_XkCe3gWNGHgcc5HxVHgJuvEYJTUry55D4JUe4hlucqb6K0ddhFSjfrPO0v3/s1600/IMG_7502.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho-PwsxA9Q0TPLnnMGMe1vsMzbMRN4Fsi3NxS4rkEACdvOaucQagqtLpyWUPRtr-jximgTh27s_XkCe3gWNGHgcc5HxVHgJuvEYJTUry55D4JUe4hlucqb6K0ddhFSjfrPO0v3/s320/IMG_7502.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOkLfvBClA0oayFs2sq1W8A5z3vYBEXcRRjeBavmAO3Zvj55lQriTs1eaPeEP7gMuC6aQe9e6CwV4_MOKGYQcEyIczXr6cQc2dNhDTz6PnprYhtozl7BgSyQy87uOLNGE6qgcU/s1600/IMG_7500.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="254" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOkLfvBClA0oayFs2sq1W8A5z3vYBEXcRRjeBavmAO3Zvj55lQriTs1eaPeEP7gMuC6aQe9e6CwV4_MOKGYQcEyIczXr6cQc2dNhDTz6PnprYhtozl7BgSyQy87uOLNGE6qgcU/s320/IMG_7500.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now I'm all caught up I think until I finished the dozens of other projects I have on the needles still. Not to mention the millions of others that I want to cast on from my queue. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><strong>Did I tell you I have an obsession?</strong></span><br />

I know it's all about the sock yarn I'm trying to use for socks so I'll have yarn left over for my Sock Yarn Blankie, but there's been other WIPs falling off the needles in the past few months or so. Such as;<br />

<br />
I love the way it looks but it was quite the chore to knit with three strands at one time. <br />

But it was worth it once it was done.<br />
<br />
And then I made up this Icord Bracelet for a friend's birthday gift ...<br />

<br />
No pattern. I just made it up as I went along. And it was the yarn left over from the shawl I also knit for her birthday. But I think I've already shown that to you already.<br />
<br />

I also finished a crocheted shrug for my youngest grand daughter. It's another pattern I can't share with you right now because it's a test knit. But I can show you a picture of the beautiful little girl I knit it for ...<br />

I took a picture of the sweater I knit for her for Christmas too and guess what .... she's almost out grown it already. Did I tell you she's only 6? The sweater is for an 8 yr old.<br />

<br />
I went to take her sweater off in order to try on the shrug and she said, "Grammy don't take my sweater. I LOVE my sweater!" I had to convince her I wasn't taking it. Only wanted her to try on the shrug and she then could have both of them. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: blue;"><strong>It's really nice to have someone that really and truely loves my knitting!!</strong></span><br />

Not just knitted stylised flowers but more detailed and realistic flowers that happen to be knitted. Yes, most of them are “felted” but if that intimidates you it’s not always necessary to felt them. If you want to leave then “just knitted” you can. Although, I think felting makes them look even more realistic.</span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">I have yet to sit down and knit any of the flowers but I have flipped through the pages many many times over; scrutinizing and planning which one to start with first while gathering some materials together. You learn and understand gauge in a new way and it contains lots of descriptions and pictures of the special techniques as well as the supplies needed to create these beautiful flowers. Fantastic! But she doesn’t just end there with just the flower patterns and gorgeous pictures. Oh how I love those pictures. But the last third of the book also covers some really beautiful projects to apply those flowers to. Different type of flowers with a variety of different yarns and project styles both for the home or to wear. My grand daughters would love the May Violets Fingerless Gloves and I'm dying to wear the Gossamer Fuchsia Wrap. Yet I want that Forget-Me-Not Pillow adorning my couch by the next change of seasons.</span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">The most difficult part of this book? I know it hardly needs any blocking at all but I only plan to soak 20 minutes in a wool bath, gently squeeze out the water and roll in a couple of beach towels to soak up the excess water and then lay out on the blocking board. No pinning this time. Just pat out flat and let it dry! Couldn't be simpler.<br />

"It's a boy!"<br />
<br />
So I've knit and crocheted up a storm for the baby in between the shawls I've knit. Now it's about time that I displayed what I've done. Such as ...<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/teddy-bear-brights-round-afghan" target="_blank">Teddy Bear Brights Round Afghan</a><br />

<br />
And of course I had to use up every bit of yarn that I had left ...<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/baby-booties" target="_blank">Mix Up the Baby Booty Socks</a><br />

<br />
And since the baby is a boy I did have to knit a sweater set for the Fall ...<br />

Honestly, I realize I've been gone a long time. But a lot of knitting has still been done while I've been busy with many other things as well. Like searching on Ancestry.com between my own family tree and helping a grand daughter with her son's; who will be born in June. Yup, I'll be a great-grandmother again for the 5th time already. It's been keeping me pretty busy too. You know I'm cranking out the baby knits, right?<br />
<br />
Also ... of course I'm still teaching knitting and crochet and consulting for a publishing company and reviewing books for another and trying to keep my DH busy and not sitting front of the TV too much, since he can't drive anymore. I just can't believe how busy I am!<br />
<br />
So I'm just letting you know that all is good. Life is wonderful! And I'll be back before long with an update. Once I can sit down and get my thoughts together that is. Those who want to peek at what I'm doing or have completed; check out the progress with the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut" target="_blank">Stitchingnut on Ravelry</a>. Go ahead, be my guest. I still keep that pretty much up to date (another thing that takes up time). In the mean time, enjoy this glorious Spring ...<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Stashbuster Knits</span> <br />
Tips, Tricks & 21 Beautiful Projects for Using Your Favorite Leftover Yarn <br />
by Melissa Leapman<br />
<br />
<br />
The title alone tells you what kind of a book you’re getting involved with here. Dealing with the knitter's stash. Oh yes, the "stash" is always something to consider when you knit and what knitter doesn’t have boxes, baskets and/or bags of left-over yarn from previous glorious projects? Of course the question is "What to do with all that yarn?" The yarn is too good to throw away of course, but there comes a time when every knitter realizes that something has to be done to make room for more. After all, the intent is to be organized and not let the stash be hindered by the lack of space as the orphan balls of yarn start to take over a room or even the whole house. As much as we love our yarn we need to do something wth it right?<br />
<br />
Melissa Leapman has the answers and gives some very good advise on how to get it all together and organized in a working manner so you can have access to what you have and make a plan on how to incorporate it all into a knitted project. Yet it also doesn’t have to look like it was made from left-over scraps. She then gives you 21 projects as a jumping off point to choose from and start you on your way to using up all those scraps taking over your house.<br />
<br />
When I first got this book I grabbed two beautiful skeins of wool from my stash to knit the Urban Knitster Slouch Hat on page 109 just to see how well written or understandable Melissa’s patterns might be. Well, I not only loved knitting the hat and wearing it afterward, but I also loved how the pattern was organized and easy to follow from start to finish. She even gives samples of how the hat might look in alternative colorways from variegated to a solid color. Nice to see it before you begin.<br />
<br />
There are a number of projects in this book that I know for sure that I want to knit and love the many tips & tricks scattered throughout the book in notes within each project, but the most invaluable part of this book is in the beginning. I’m referring to the "How to get it all together and sort it" section of the book. Melissa recommends sorting by weight first and then color families. She tells us how to do this and even gives us a couple of charts to go by for us knitters who find this one of the hardest things to do without a ball band. A problem for many of those left-over balls of yarn. But don’t fear, Melissa has helpful charts also. She even includes a chart on how to get the weight you need by combining two or three other weights of yarn. Even picking out the correct color combinations can be daunting. But Melissa gives you all the information you need to be successful. I hardly have to stress how invaluable it is to know how to plan the color combinations. Oh how I love this potential in this book. Melissa explains it and breaks it all down to where anybody will have success by following her advise.<br />
<br />
I know I'll be referring to this books for many other projects as well. Even just for the color combination secion alone. So now I'm going to take Melissa's suggestion of shopping from my Stash and making use of this wonderful book while knitting a dent into my own yarn collection. But first I need to pull all those hidden balls out into the open and find out just what I have. Thanks for the inspiration, Melissa!<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/stitchingnut/urban-knitster-slouch-hat" target="_blank">Urban Knitster Soucy Hat</a> came from this book and it's now one of my favorites.<br />
<br />

<span style="color: blue;"><strong>But now I have to get back to my knitting. Catch ya later knitsters!!</strong></span>Rhonda the Stitchingnuthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13293726323658592275noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21490878.post-57149351381440083032012-01-02T07:53:00.002-05:002012-01-02T07:55:05.100-05:00A New Year ... and more knitting ahead of me in 2012.Well I hope everyone had some nice memorable holiday cheer last year. A happy new year is ahead of us now along with ... yup, more knitting of course. First I'll just give you the update on what I finished for Christmas gifts in 2011. Of course I got a pair of fingerless mitts done for my DH. So he won't get cold hands while he reads the Kindle I got for him for his big Christmas gift this year. [he gave me a Touch Kindle so I could be read to with text-t0-speech while I knit.]<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ri22a1SaflE/TwGWNTWpEvI/AAAAAAAADN0/8-aQE90jHTw/s1600/IMG_6367.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ri22a1SaflE/TwGWNTWpEvI/AAAAAAAADN0/8-aQE90jHTw/s400/IMG_6367.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
And I also completed the fingerless mitts for my dear daughter [DD] who knew they would be a little late getting to her. <em>Oh ya, there's a story behind these </em> <br />
<div class="value"><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hourglass-mitts"><em>Hourglass Mitts</em></a><em> by Anastasia Blaes. </em></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JgBtF7UIJgI/TwGXXwlzLnI/AAAAAAAADOA/GmzShSsb-EM/s1600/IMG_6441.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JgBtF7UIJgI/TwGXXwlzLnI/AAAAAAAADOA/GmzShSsb-EM/s400/IMG_6441.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kFCgk4MDCyY/TwGXbJgismI/AAAAAAAADOI/n1RpJfp7qXk/s1600/IMG_6439.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kFCgk4MDCyY/TwGXbJgismI/AAAAAAAADOI/n1RpJfp7qXk/s400/IMG_6439.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I love the way they work so well being worn over a pair of leather gloves too. Keeps you hands extra worm on those very cold days. <br />
<br />
But I did say there was a story behind them didn't I? Okay, I'll admit to not always being the perfect knitting machine that I seem to be at times. Dare I say that I don't believe in being "perfect" anyway? Well the pattern for this traveling stitch design comes with a 60 row chart. That's<em> sixty</em> <em>rows</em> mind you. So I knit up the right hand without a hitch and was on my way to completing the left hand up to a few days before we were to go up to New Hampshire to see the kids for our Christmas get-together. I'm on row 59 late into the evenin' and I'm determined to get 'em done & have them on the blocking board before going to bed. They may still be damp when we leave for NH in a couple of days but that's okay, they can dry in their new home. All I have to do after this last row is the 4 garter stitch boarder and then the thumb ...<em> the Thumb</em>. There was NO HOLE for the thumb. I <em>forgot</em> to do the gusset and hold off the stitches for the thumb. Where was I <em>suppose</em> to do this? Well way back on row 17. That's right; row <em>seventeen</em>. <br />
<br />
I've knit over 40 pairs of fingerless gloves and mittens in the past few years and never once did I forget to do the gusset for the thumb. Now someone made a very good suggestion of using EZ's afterthought thumb. BUT, I had already done the right hand correctly and the left had to match because it was a gift right. So yup, I frogged back to row 17.<br />
<br />
It's all in the process isn't it? So I'm over it now. <em>And I'll never forget the gusset again!</em><br />
<br />
One last pair of fingerless mitts for a gift went to the munchkin, JD because she wondered where her's were. [inspite of the fact she was the only one who got a sweater] At least she loves my knitting right? Well she's only 5 1/2 and I needed to "size up her hands" I told her. So I had her measure her's with mine to give me an idea of how small to make her mitts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4RIdGQYpQkw/TwGb4cjaUOI/AAAAAAAADOU/E13yErQzY_E/s1600/IMG_6364.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4RIdGQYpQkw/TwGb4cjaUOI/AAAAAAAADOU/E13yErQzY_E/s400/IMG_6364.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iA-PtSZGhLo/TwGduGoBHDI/AAAAAAAADOc/0NQzI02vYqw/s1600/Jaydens+mitts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iA-PtSZGhLo/TwGduGoBHDI/AAAAAAAADOc/0NQzI02vYqw/s400/Jaydens+mitts.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And they seem to fit her perfectly.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So now I can knit for myself! And with that in mind I went crazy casting on ...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">but I also completed a couple of hats and a pair of mitts for myself by Christmas.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div>Believe it or not I've finished with the Christmas gift knitting, but I've been busy with knitting for myself as well of course and wrapping, mailing and giving out gifts in person. So until I get my completed knitting pictures are put together ... here's some pictures of one family gathering with some of the grandchildren two weekends ago.<br />
<br />
JD wearing her sweater that Grammy knit.<br />

Really.</span><br />
<br />
Honestly, unless it's way below zero when you have your hands covered in wool or alpaca the warmth will extend into your fingers. Even if they're not completely covered. Such as when you wear Fingerless Mitts, Wristwarmers, or Armwarmers ... or whatever you might know them to be called. I for one; absolutely LOVE them! I wear them all through the Fall, Winter and Spring. And if it's cold inside they get slipped on rather than putting up the heat and burning the oil. Yup, warm hands will help to make me warm all over.<br />
<br />
Completed more Chtistmas gifts ...<br />
